Variable Speed Drives

Variable Speed Drives, also known as Variable or Adjustable Frequency Drives, or AC Drives, are a type of drive employed in electro-mechanical drive systems for controlling the motor's torque and speed, by varying the voltage and frequency of the motor input.

Electric motors can be made much more efficient by the use of Variable Speed Drives, especially in variable-torque centrifugal loads such as pump and fan applications. Power electronics technology has been consistently reducing the size and cost of VSDs over the decades, and advances in drive topologies, techniques, control software and semi-conductor switching devices have all helped to improve their overall performance.

Many modern VSD units come in a broad selection of different frame sizes and modular options, starting with a basic version with a power and control unit, operator panel and a blanking cover, up to more advanced intelligent operator panels for complex operations. All components in a modular VSD can be replaced independently without needing to reset the unit's basic parameters, thus reducing costs and environmental impact.
