Timing Relays are simply the control relays used in all electrical switching operations that involve built-in time delays, and can be incorporated in starting, protective and control circuits. With a standard control relay, outputs open or close when voltage is applied to the electromagnetic coil or removed from it. With Timing Relays, the contacts can be opened or closed in accordance with a specified time delay, and are usually triggered by applying input voltage or by a trigger signal. These can be either a power trigger (voltage activated) or a dry contact control switch such as a push button, float switch or limit switch.
Timing Relays can be used for many industrial, domestic or military applications, and their compact, space-saving modular design means they are ideal for integration into power distribution boards and control cabinets. This type of relay is particularly useful in heating, lighting, air-conditioning and ventilation systems, and compressors, and can take a variety of forms.
Simple Timing Relays have an ON- or OFF-delay for routine activation, with a slightly more complex system incorporating the gradual start-up or selective shut-down of motors so the mains supply is not overloaded. More advanced Timing Relays can generate overtravel functions after the voltage is removed, suppress interference pulses, and switch motors over from wye to delta, in order to prevent shorting between phases.
