Switchgear and Circuit Protection

Switchgear and Circuit Protection

Electrical Switchgear is a general term which encompasses all types of switching device used in protecting electrical power systems, including those associated with control, regulation, circuit protection and metering. Any logical assemblage of such devices is known as Switchgear.

In domestic terms, low voltage switches are used to open and close electrical circuits manually, such as lights, heating and appliances, while electrical fuses protect the home's electrical circuit from short circuits and overload. In commercial and military applications, Switchgear and Circuit Protection is even more important; higher voltages and complex automation systems come into play, and every electrical system requires measuring, regulation and control.

Overload currents can happen in any electrical circuit if circumstances contrive to exceed the permissible load, such as a high current-drawing activity or simultaneous operation of equipment by several consumers. Short-circuits result from conductive connections arising out of a connectivity fault, and can discharge explosively. In either event, electrical cables can heat up and cause fires to break out, leading to accidents, electric shock, damage to installations or even loss of entire buildings.

Modern technology and lifestyles have drastically increased the demand on energy supply, and the level of sophistication of transport hubs, data centres and industrial plants has led to increasingly strict safety requirements. Switchgear and Circuit Protection is therefore essential for safety reasons, and mandatory in any electrical system, large or small. Rowse Automation carries a large stock of such items, including Switch Disconnectors, Circuit Protection Fuses, MCBs and smart solutions for the most state-of-the-art systems.
